ALSO: Apple delays their AI features in the EU

Estimated Read Time: 5 minutes
Good old Zuckerberg is complaining about other AI companies creating a single closed āsuper AIā, likening it to creating their own god. And given Googleās recent troubles and OpenAIās delayed voice features, maybe heās right. Maybe AI companies shouldnāt put all of their eggs in one basket.

š Mark Zuckerberg claims closed AI companies are ācreating Godā

What happened: In a recent interview, Mark Zuckerberg says companies with closed/centralized AIs are busy trying to create āGodā. This comes right after reports that his deal with Apple fell through over privacy concerns. (Sour grapes much?) š
The details:
Zuckerberg criticized companies aiming to build a single dominant AI (a ātrueā AI), likening it to creating āGod.ā
He believes open source AIs are more experimental and innovative, and that creating many AIs for multiple needs is better than one super AI tackling everything.
There was very little talk about the monopoly big tech companies, like Meta, have over the AI industry and the danger that poses. š§
Meta is currently testing AI Studio in the US. The feature allows creators to make their own AI Avatar and share them on Instagram. Kinda like an AI clone. Cool⦠but creepy. (TikTok is already doing something similar.)
Meta has recently been criticized by photographers for labeling their real-life photos as āMade with AIā. Clearly thereās room for improvement.
Why it matters: Itās true that open source AI is better for humanity as a whole. And creating a single super AI is not only short sighted, but dangerous. Zuck isnāt the first person to say AI companies are trying to create a god. But for now the real danger with AI as a whole is how much big tech companies like Meta control everything. It sounds more like heās whining because he lost the deal with Apple.

Appleās AI feature suite.
š Apple is delaying Apple Intelligence in the EU over regulation concerns. And this goes beyond pure AI features to include iPhone Mirroring, and SharePlay Screen Sharing. Kind of a double edged sword. On one hand, they succeeded in protecting citizen privacy. But on the other the EU could fall behind in the AI race (remember: productivity is a form of competition). Iām betting the AI features will change heavily for EU users once they release.
𦾠Biden is restricting US investment in Chinese tech, including AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors. In fact, the US has been steadily weening off their reliance on Chinese manufactured AI chips, making deals with the EU and Japan in the process. Theoretically China could sneak whatever backdoors they wanted into the chips they develop, even now. Or this could be a way of protecting US companies from overseas competition. Maybe both.

š§ Youtube is making AI music deals with big record companies

What happened: Youtube wants to pay for permission to train their AI on licensed music.
The details:
Theyāre offering to pay Universal Music Group , Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records lump sums of cash (rather than royalties) in exchange for licensing their songs to train its AI music tools.
The new AI music tools will supposedly be launched later this year.
YouTube already has an AI music feature, Dream Track, using artists like Charli XCX, John Legend, and T-Pain. It was an experiment more than anything.
Sony Music warned against unauthorized AI use and UMG previously pulling its catalog from TikTok due to AI-related issues.
Multiple musicians have spoken against AI music⦠but I doubt thatāll stop the record companies from seeing the writing on the wall.
Takeaway: The reason for this deal is pretty obvious. Youtube wants to dodge the copyright issues Suno and Udio are facing right now (theyāre getting sued). The issue highlights a big moneybag for tech companies: Data is money. Reddit, video sites, photos, and every form of data are needed for training AI right now. Itās a secondary gold rush for tech companies with info to sell.

š¤ Sam Altmanās AI company Rain hires ex-Apple chip expert

What happened: Sam Altmanās other AI startup, Rain, has made their second high profile hiring move this month. Jean-Didier Allegrucci, an Apple chip expert.
The details:
Rain recruited Apple chip executive Allegrucci to their hardware engineering division.
He joins Amin Firoozshahian, who worked at Meta for five years before joining Rain.
The goal of the new hires is to develop a new semiconductor for AI use.
Rain is joining the race to develop new AI chip hardware (specifically in-memory computing) along with Intel, Samsung, and others.
Why this matters: Whoever wins the next AI hardware race could become the next Nvidia. Right now AI datacenters require massive amounts of hardware and electricity, with reports saying each datacenter will someday need the power supply of a small country. Creating more efficient hardware is a goldmine waiting to exploited.

š³ Attack of the forest animals!

Okay, this oneās not attacking anyone. Probably.
