The government has finally realized AI is a big deal 😱. Governing bodies around the world have been looking at AI amusement rather than amazement… until the elections come around. Turns out lawmakers will finally create laws if the subject affects them.

  • Biden orders every federal agency to have AI experts.

  • Amazon invests over $2.75B into Anthropic.

  • California desires to create AI laws like the EU.

  • AI job losses may already be happening.

✏️White House orders every federal agency to have an AI officer

What happened: Biden has mandated all federal groups to hire a chief AI officer. The order comes as fear rises about deepfakes in the elections, a concern noted repeatedly by every governing body around the world.

The details:

  • Every federal agency must have an AI officer and plans to hire 100 AI experts by the end of the year.

  • The chief AI officer’s role is to ensure AI developments do not negatively impact safety, security, and civil rights.

  • The purpose of the move is to stay ahead of the curve. Upcoming AI tools like Sora are widening concern over deepfake technology.

  • By the end of the year, agencies must show how they keep AI use safe for Americans.

Why it matters: Implementation is the biggest issue here. While the US hires AI officers, the EU has made actual laws to restrict dangerous AI uses. Time will tell if these officers are just fluff or if they help change the government’s response to AI.

The end of the job market?

Midjourney video might come by the end of the year. David, the founder of Midjourney, has stated video is on its way. We know nothing else about their video feature though. You know what I want? A better interface and consistent characters. Those two things can make literal movies a reality.

Corporations are adopting AI slower than big tech expected. Big AI companies like Google are trying to calm the hype as they focus more on building rather than profit. Most AI companies want immediate profits, which is stupid because AI breakthrough are made everyday (just read this newsletter and you’ll see some.) Compare this to AI driven cars, which have almost no expectation of a financial return for years. But nobody complains.

Over 1500 journalism jobs were cut in 2024 alone, and AI is being blamed. As AI adoption rises (especially for content creation), the rate of jounralism job cuts has increased dramatically. But I do not believe AI is causing these job losses. The correlation is not causation. Economics and revenue are the likely reasons for these job cuts, not AI. Chatbots can’t even automate most creative work yet. You still need someone to read them and correct their nonsense. Be prepared for more narratives like this one in coming months.

🤑Amazon invests $2.75 billion into AI

What happened: Amazon has invested $2.75B into AI company Anthropic, the makers of Claude 3. The investment is meant to strengthen Amazon’s ties to AI and bring future AI features to Amazon’s customers.

The details:

  • Amazon will own a small portion of the company.

  • This is the largest external investment Amazon has ever made.

  • The investment is one part of Amazon’s larger promise to invest over $4B into Anthropic.

  • Google has also invested over $2B into Anthropic.

  • Anthropic’s AI, Claude 3, is now considered the best AI chatbot all around (although that’ll change with new releases around the corner).

Why it matters: Two things. First, Amazon is making their move into AI and will likely use the AI models developed by other companies rather than making their own. Second, Anthropic is officially a big player. We didn’t hear a squeak from them in 2023. All eyes were on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. But now they’ve come out swinging for the number one spot. Keep an eye on them.

🧑‍⚖️California looks to the EU for AI laws

What happened: California is getting serious about controlling AI, taking cues from Europe's strict tech laws. Lawmakers there want to make sure AI is used safely and fairly, especially with new tech like ChatGPT shaking things up.

The details:

  • California has over 30 bills proposed to manage AI, most inspired by the EU’s recent AI Act. Told you that was big.

  • The motivation for these laws is concern over deepfakes in the elections (of course).

  • Tech companies are fighting back against regulations for AI. They want to regulate themselves.

Why this matters: These laws could spark something in the US. We might get more state laws or even a federal law. My only problem is the selfish motivations of the lawmakers. These laws should have been enacted last year (if not earlier).

🥊Infringing on Rocky Balboa - Midjourney VS DALLE

Let’s make Rocky Balboa, iconic fictional boxer. (Every time I watch Rocky I want to knock someone out.) And let’s compare Midjourney to DALLE while we’re at it.

First up, DALLE:

So that was… interesting.

DALLE is hyper critical of ANY copyright infringement. I had to half-hypnotize it into making the last image and it still doesn’t look good.

Now let’s compare that to Midjourney:

Much better (still a bit weird though). And it took no brainwashing at all.

Poor DALLE…
