This week’s biggest headlines

So much to cover. Let’s go!

👋Amazon added biometric palm print scans to the Amazon One app. You can snap a picture of your palm and send it away, then use your palm at select locations to purchase. Not that you’ll catch me doing that. There’s a lot of resistance to sending your prints to someone.

🧠Microsoft wants AI to run locally on your PC. They’re working with Intel and Qualcomm to create NPU chips, which will enable AI models to run locally on your home PC. The new PCs will even have a button on the keyboard dedicated to Microsoft Copilot.

👄OpenAI revealed their Voice Engine, an AI voice generator which can copy a person’s voice from a mere 15-second clip. They refuse to release it though. The tech is supposedly so good that it presents serious security risks. Someone could steal your identity or enter voice authenticated passwords and banks. Some serious deepfake concerns here.

🤑Microsoft and OpenAI are building a $100B supercomputer. The supercomputer will be made to power AI projects and is planned to be ready by 2028. However it’ll require some serious energy, to which nuclear power may be the only answer.

👀Apple’s new AI system can see and understand your screen. The new tech, named ReALM, is designed to help voice assistants understand the context of what you’re asking them. The upcoming IOS 18 update is rumored to heavily use AI for many features. Hmmm voice assistant and AI… doesn’t that sound like Siri? 🤔

🛠️You can edit DALL-E 3 images within DALL-E. While nothing revolutionary, you can grab specific parts of the image and tell the AI to only change those aspects of the image. Pretty cool, but DALL-E still falls short of Midjourney in image creation.

✏️Over 200 music celebrities wrote a letter to the AI industry demanding that human creativity be respected. While the letter itself won’t do anything (they need legal action), many industry powerhouses like Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish, and others signed the letter. It’s definitely raising awareness.

🤯AI startup Cognition Labs is seeking a valuation of $2B despite only founding last November. Cognition Labs are the creators of Devin, the AI software engineer which put coders on life support last month. Investors are concerned the high prices of AI startups is creating a bubble similar to the tech bubble of the 1990’s. There’s a massive investing frenzy in AI right now.

Google might paywall AI powered search results behind a premium subscription. The move coincides with the rising costs of developing and training AI. The prices of AI tech may soon rise.

🥊Big tech companies are forming the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium to combat AI induced layoffs. The goal is to train employees to use AI and assess which jobs are at stake. Time will tell if their efforts bear any fruit. 🍎

Elon Musk claims OpenAI is trying to poach his employees. AI engineers are fiercely competed over across the industry, leading to Elon raising his employees’ compensation. He even claims OpenAI has been successful in poaching a few of his engineers. This makes sense, AI is in a massive boom (or bubble), so AI specialists are in high demand. For once companies have to compete for the talent instead of the other way around. That’s one career path that’s not going anywhere.

The US Congress has banned staff from using Microsoft Copilot. The reason? House staff could leak information to non-House approved cloud services. Makes me wonder how AI will be utilized with the new AI officers hired into government.

The United States and EU put out a joint statement affirming their desire to cooperate on AI developments. Overall it’s nice to see, but much of the playing power still remains with the companies who make AI. Legislation needs to change if we want the companies to change. But this joint effort will likely extend to behind-the-scenes AI developments, like AI created for Military and Economic purposes. The kind of AI the government itself will use.
