You ready to play chess with your mind? Well thanks to Neuralink, that science fiction dream is now a reality. Meanwhile hollywood thinks they’re about to get wiped out thanks to AI video generation while Tennessee moves to protect the music industry. Let’s dive in!

♟️Neuralink shows quadriplegic playing chess with his mind

What happened: Neuralink’s first human brain chip patient is a quadriplegic who now plays videogames with his mind. Elon Musk’s brain chip company showed off Noland’s mind-powered chess playing skills on X earlier this week.

The details: 

• Neuralink’s patient, Noland Arbaugh is paralyzed but can now control a computer cursor using his thoughts.

• He got the Neuralink chip in January and says the surgery was super easy.

• The chip, about the size of a coin, is placed in the skull and reads brain activity.

• The chip allows Noland to play videogames without another person’s help.

Why it matters: Neuralink’s brain chip shows the medical industry is rapidly changing from science fiction into reality. And someday paraplegics might be able to walk again. It’s nice to see this upside in an otherwise very scary technology.

Devin has an open source rival, Devika, an autonomous coding program that does programmer’s jobs for them. Devin scared the crap out of software engineers earlier this month. Now Devika offers a free and open source alternative. Hint: This means many more autonomous coders are on their way.

San Jose is spying on the homeless using AI. San Jose invited tech companies to mount cameras on a vehicle to identify where people were sleeping, which feeds into an AI system. The original intent for the car was identifying illegal parking. The whole issue has raised privacy and ethical concerns. Yay for surveillance?

🤯OpenAI pitches Sora to Hollywood

What happened: OpenAI just pitched their video generation AI, Sora, to Hollywood executives and directors. The result? A myriad of AI generated videos showcasing the technology released online. Hollywood execs were very impressed. And scared.

The details:

• OpenAI has approached Hollywood to try out Sora, their AI video generation tool. It literally makes videos from a text prompt.

• Hollywood creatives released a plethora of AI generated videos online.

• Sora appears to have trouble keeping characters consistent.

• Tyler Perry has already seen Sora in action, and was so impressed he held off on an $800M movie studio expansion.

• Tyler Perry was insistent that regulations need to protect the movie industry or they simply won’t survive.

• Sora will likely be much more expensive than traditional image generation, thus the desire for Hollywood money.

Why it matters: Video is about to change forever. Movies, shows, Youtube, all of it will change. You won’t know what’s real. And there’ll be AI generated crap everywhere. On a bright note, creatives will have an easier time making amazing content.

🤫GPT-5 might release this summer

What happened: Reports say GPT-5 or 4.5 will come out this summer. While nobody knows exactly what will release, we do know from insider reports that a substantial upgrade is coming.

The details: 

• Sam Altman claims GPT-5 will be a massive upgrade and GPT-4 “kinda sucks”. 

• Insider reports say GPT-5 has already been given to select beta testers.

• Rumored abilities include launching AI agents to perform tasks automatically.

• Reports say OpenAI is still training GPT-5 right now and will begin bug fixing soon.

Why this matters: ChatGPT is the face of AI. The release of ChatGPT in 2023 sparked the AI boom we’re seeing right now. It opened the public’s eyes to what AI could really do. And it’s looking like GPT-5 is bound to be a monumental leap forward for productivity. Pay close attention to this one.

🎵Tennessee moves to protect music from AI

What happened: The state of Tennessee just passed a landmark state law to protect the music industry’s copyright from AI. The Elvis Act, as it’s called, is a sigh of relief for an industry that is quaking in fear of AI.

The details: 

• Tennessee is the first state to regulate AI’s use in music. Florida and Texas look like they could be next.

• The law will prevent AI from mimicking an artist’s voice without permission.

• AI music (like Suno.ai) has been throwing the music industry into a panic.

• The music industry contributes over $5.8B to the state’s GDP. They’re a massive part of Tennessee’s economy.

Why this matters: It’s about time AI gets some handcuffs. This law gives the music industry hope that more states (and countries) follow through and give artists a fighting chance to stick around. The bad news: AI music will take longer to develop with more laws around. So it’s a tradeoff.
