The world is still settling after the near assassination of Trump. But that hasn’t stopped the AI world from turning. And we’re opening up with the area AI can have the biggest impact… medical breakthroughs.

Oh and we know what OpenAI’s project Q* is. Yeah.

🧠 AI chip restored bilingual speech in stroke victim

What happened: Nvidia's AI brain chip has restored the ability for a stroke victim to communicate bilingually.

The details: 

• The chip does not restore the user’s speech, instead it displays the intended words on screen allowing the user to communicate again.

• The chip detects the intended language and translates brain waves into Spanish or English sentences. Allowing for bilingual communication.

• Sentence accuracy is decent at around 75%. A huge upgrade from not being able to communicate at all.

• Nvidia used Nvidia V100 GPUs and the cuDNN-accelerated PyTorch framework for training.

Why it matters: This is a bigger step than people might think. Deciphering the intended words is the first step to fully restoring speech capability in stroke victims (and other conditions too).

🔥 OpenAI is in hot water for allegedly barring employees from whistleblowing with restrictive NDAs. Whistleblowers filed a complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission against OpenAI, claiming the NDAs violated federal whistleblower rights by requiring employees to waive compensation and get prior consent before disclosing information to regulators. And yeah, this could spell trouble for OpenAI.

💰 AMD just acquired Silo AI for over $660M. The aim is simply to help with AI development. Peter Sarlin, CEO of Silo AI, will continue to work under AMD’s AI team. Silo AI specializes in end-to-end AI-driven solutions and created open-source LLMs Poro and Viking.

🍓 Strawberry is OpenAI’s project Q*

What happened: According to recent leaks, OpenAI is developing a secret project named “Strawberry” to give AI reasoning and planning a big boost in capabilities. And guess what? We’ve seen it before. It’s Project Q*. 👀

The details:

• First off, Strawberry is supposedly project Q*. Yes, the secret project leaked last year when Sam Altman was temporarily fired from the company.

• It’s a highly secretive project focused on increasing AI’s reasoning capabilities, which is one of AI’s greatest weaknesses.

• Basically Strawberry is a reasoning engine used to improve their AI.

• Last Tuesday OpenAI held an internal meeting where they demoed a research project that had human level reasoning skills.

• Strawberry involves a specialized way of processing an AI model after it has been pre-trained on very large datasets.

• The project aims to constantly navigate the internet and conduct research autonomously.

• Strawberry is reportedly training on a deep research dataset specifically for research tasks.

• Sam Altman has said he believes reasoning ability is the next big step for AI and will result in actual super-intelligence.

• Altman continued saying, “the most important areas of progress will be around reasoning ability.”

Why it matters: The biggest flaw with most AI models is their reasoning. They lack context awareness, common sense, and logical consistency. If AI can be made to reason better it’ll be a massive step in making AI more useful. But I’m… disappointed this is Q*. Everyone thought Q* was true AGI, something completely revolutionary. But perhaps we’ll have to wait and see how better reasoning makes AI better before jumping to conclusions.
