When ChatGPT first released, it was reportedly a massive day of panic at Google. At the time, many people didn’t understand why. But now it’s clear… AI is going to replace traditional web search. And OpenAI plans to do it.

🥊OpenAI vs Google: The battle for search

What happened: OpenAI is on Monday. Yes, that means it may get announced by the time you read this 😢. But it is a rumor as I write this. Here’s what we know (right now).

The details: 

• The search function will use their AI model, but it’s unclear if the feature will be separate or integrated into ChatGPT.

• It’s set to be announced Monday during a livestream (literally as you read this…)

• According to reports from 2022, Google went into a “Code Red” emergency the day ChatGPT released to the public. They already knew what was happening…

• You can already tell ChatGPT to search the internet for information… so the capability is already there.

• Alphabet’s stock fell over 2% after Sam Altman’s announcement.

• The announcement is strategically timed… Google is having their own event on Tuesday for their AI lineup.

Why it matters: Wow, this could literally change how we use the internet. Google has been the top dog for so long… it’s hard to imagine them getting beat. But Google has become worse lately. And AI has potential to wipe out the middleman, getting rid of both search results AND the articles we’d search for in the first place. This’ll be interesting… and important.

📉 Claude 3 was met with lukewarm reception on IOS compared to the immense popularity of ChatGPT’s app. This says a few things. First, ChatGPT is the face of AI to the general public. It’s the one everyone knows because it was the first. It has that image now. Second, there’s only so much consumer/general audience need for a chatbot. The average person, who isn’t doing something very specific with AI, doesn’t need more than one competent chatbot. Claude 3 is good, and even better than GPT-4 Turbo in some ways. But I doubt most users on IOS care to use it.

🤔 The mysterious gpt-2 bot, rumored to be a GPT-5 test, has returned. The chatbot previously vanished into thin air, but now it’s back in two new forms. Under the guise of “im a good gpt-2 bot” and “im also a good gpt-2 bot”, the bot has returned for another go. And people are still shocked at how good it is, while simultaneously thinking this is a test for OpenAI’s next model. You can use it here for free. Just click “Direct Chat” and click the drop down box full of bot names. Select the right bot and you’re good to go!

💋Your AI clone will date other AI clones on dating apps…

What happened: Bumble’s founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd, just spoke about the future of AI in dating apps. And it’s… a bit surreal. Her plan is for an AI clone/avatar of you to date other AI avatars. Most people ain’t buying it.

The details:

• Herd’s plan is to use AI avatars of users to date each other as a compatibility test before the real people even meet.

• Her statement was immediately met by laughter from the audience.

• Herd claims you wouldn’t need to speak with 600 people, instead the AI could help narrow you down to only 3.

• She says other ways AI can help dating is by comforting people or helping them move past insecurities. You know, like an AI therapist (you can already do this).

• She warns that AI can otherwise massively harm real dating by creating fake personas. (This is true.)

• Bumble recently started using AI to detect scammers on their platform and ban them.

Why it matters: We’re already seeing the rise of virtual girlfriends and boyfriends. Seriously, it’s a real thing right here and now. There are apps for it. But nobody has taken AI to help real people date each other yet.

But… AI isn’t very good at mimicking personalities yet. The idea is neat, but it requires good execution to mean anything. And that execution has yet to be seen.

🦙Llama 3 competes with GPT-4

What happened: According to some recent AI tests, Llama 3 packs a punch to equal GPT-4. Sorta. While it doesn’t win in every category, it definitely trades blows.

The details: 

• Llama 3 excels in open-ended creative tasks such as writing and brainstorming but shows weaker results in close-ended tasks like math and coding problems.(Typical.)

• The tests were against GPT-4 Turbo and Claude 3 Opus, which are the current top models.

• Llama 3 scores lower as the prompt becomes increasingly complex. 

• Overall Llama 3 has shown to be very powerful despite being free and open source. It’s an especially attractive alternative for developers.

Why this matters: Open source AI is a good thing. In fact, it’s the only way we’ll ever break free of Big Tech’s iron grip on most AI companies. While Meta makes Llama 3, it’s free and anyone can alter it. So stats like these which show the capability of the model are a positive light for everyone using AI. Doubly so for developers, who now have a strong and free model to create products with.
