🎄 OpenAI to release new model in December

What happened: OpenAI is reportedly planning to release its next AI model, codenamed “Orion,” by December 2023, according to a report by The Verge.

The details:

  • The model is expected to be gradually released to trusted partners before a broader rollout through ChatGPT, with Microsoft engineers potentially gaining access as early as November.

  • OpenAI has denied this report, but that doesn’t mean much.

  • OpenAI recently raised $6.6B in funding at a $157B valuation, with investors expecting the company to continue leading in AI advancements by releasing increasingly capable models.

Why it matters: OpenAI is the face of AI right now. Any model they release is not only cutting edge, it’s a reflection of the future direction for all AI companies.

What happened: Stability AI has announced the release of Stable Diffusion 3.5. It’s a massive upgrade over older models, and as always, it’s free to use for consumers and developers. (Many of the new features are very technical though.)

The details:

  • The release includes multiple variants to cater to different users, including the flagship Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large with 8 billion parameters and 1-megapixel resolution, and a Large Turbo variant that offers similar quality but generates images faster.

  • A Medium version optimized for consumer hardware, featuring 2.5 billion parameters and supporting image generation between 0.25 and 2 megapixels, is scheduled for release on October 29.

  • The models incorporate “Query-Key Normalisation” in transformer blocks for enhanced training stability and easier fine-tuning, and

  • Licensing: The models use a permissive community license allowing free non-commercial use and commercial use for businesses with annual revenues under $1 million.

Why it matters: Stability’s been on the rocks this year. But recent funding, which brought in players from major tech and AI giants, has brought Stability new life. Stability isn’t the big name it used to be, but that might change if their models continue this level of quality.

🧠 Anthropic’s new Claude model can control your PC

What happened: Anthropic announced upgrades to Claude 3.5 and a new “computer control” feature currently in public beta. In addition, they released their analysis tool allowing users to run and write Javascript code in Claude.

The details:

  • The upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet writes code significantly better than the older model, with a 49.0% on the SWE-bench Verified benchmark and surpassing all publicly available models, including those from OpenAI. (Look at AI model scores with a pinch of salt though.)

  • The “computer control” feature allows Claude to interact with computers like a human—viewing screens, controlling cursors, clicking, and typing. This is the first model to do something like this.

  • The new Claude 3.5 Haiku model matches the performance of the previous Claude 3 Opus while being more cost-effective and faster. It’ll release later this month. Claude 3.5 Haiku achieves a 40.6% on the SWE-bench Verified benchmark.

  • Claude also released a new feature, the analysis tool, allowing it to easily run and write Javascript code. This allows it to perform calculations, analyze data from files like spreadsheets and PDFs, and render interactive visualizations.

  • Claude, while not as popular as ChatGPT with consumers, is gaining traction in the corporate world and with tech enthusiasts.

Takeaway: Claude’s long been a favorite for programmers and tech enthusiasts. I’m seeing more and more coders switch from custom models, such as Aider, to general models like ChatGPT and Claude. These models are trying to do everything at once, and they’re succeeding.
