AI models have a plethora of information on you, just as search engines do. But while companies like Google have massive security protocols to protect your data, AI companies are small, new and potentially know even more about you. And a breach into OpenAI, which happened last year, is opening the discussion about security for AI models.

  • 😵 OpenAI was hacked last year, we’re just finding out now.

  • 🦾 Perplexity gets a research upgrade.

😵 OpenAI was hacked last year, we’re just finding out now

What happened: OpenAI was hacked last year and the event wasn’t made public until this week. While the systems housing key AI technologies weren’t compromised, sensitive information was exposed.

The details:

  • No customer or partner data was stolen.

  • Neither were systems housing key AI technologies.

  • In response OpenAI established a Safety and Security Committee with former NSA head Paul Nakasone.

  • Ex-OpenAI Employee, Leopold Aschenbrenner, criticized the company’s security. He was later dismissed for leaking information.

Why it matters: This should scare people. AI companies have a boatload of sensitive data. It’s not just your email and password, but your conversations with the AI. What you divulge. What the AI interacts with. This isn’t that different from the security concerns over Windows Recall. There’s a lot of important personal data here and it needs to be protected.

🦾 Perplexity just got an upgrade. Pro Search has been upgraded for more advanced problem-solving, now featuring multi-step reasoning and enhanced math and programming capabilities. Basically your ability to research with Perplexity just got a lot easier. Checkout Perplexity’s announcement here.

šŸ”„ Nvidia is put under France’s microscope for potential anti-trust practices. After all, Nvidia is THE company to buy GPUs to power AI models. But I doubt anything serious will come from this. What’s really important here is the general stance against Big Tech’s dominance of AI. Which is why news of new open-source competitors is a good thing. Just keep an eye on these big companies. Btw Nvidia just overtook Microsoft as the world’s most valuable company. šŸ’°

🄊 ChatGPT has an open source competitor

What happened: French startup Kyutai just revealed their open source AI model Moshi. And it’s looking impressively similar to GPT-4o. You can check out the announcement video here.

The details:

  • Moshi is a real time voice assistant capable of responding in a variety of emotions and vocal styles (whispering, accents).

  • Like GPT-4o, Moshi can listen and speak simultaneously.

  • The model is free and will be open source in the coming weeks, meaning developers can edit it to their heart’s content.

  • Kyutai is non-profit and launched last year with over $300M in funding.

  • The model is available now through a sort of ā€œtrialā€ period.

Why it matters: Wow! I didn’t expect this. But this is impressive. Moshi might just be the first actual real time voice assistant. The ability for devs to take this and customize the model opens a door to incredible future potential.
