OpenAI is decisively not very open. They just fired two more employees in what appears to be a power struggle. And Apple is about to make some major AI-focused moves this year with IOS and MacOS.

🔥OpenAI fires two researchers for leaks

Where the news broke.
What happened: OpenAI just fired two researchers, Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov, for internal leaks. Rumor says the leaks were about Q*, the “threat to humanity”. These same leaks may have led to Sam Altman’s temporary removal last year. 🍿
The details:
One of the fired researchers was close to Ilya Sutskever, who reportedly tried to overthrow Sam Altman with his removal last year. Oh the drama.
The firing follows after an internal investigation over security breaches.
Rumors speculate this is about Q*, which is further rumored to be AGI.
This could indicate an internal power struggle within OpenAI between Altman and Sutskever.
Why it matters: It’s dissapointing to watch OpenAI become so secretive. Not very “open” now is it? We still have no concrete info on Q*, but it’s unclear why OpenAI has been so secretive about it. Right now we don’t know the reason these researchers were fired (I’ll update if anything comes out).

As of 04.14.2024 market close.

Meta will auto-blur nudity in Instagram as part of an effort to protect teens. And any users who send or receive nudes will be directed toward safety tips. Of course, Meta is doing this not out of the good of their heart, but to prevent lawmakers from regulating them as they turn their attention towards social platforms.
Adobe is buying videos at $3 per minute in order to train their AI. Tech companies are running out of internet data to train AI and need more. Much more. According to reports, Adobe is paying creators $120 to send them training material. Most of these videos show everyday activities like walking and swimming. This is the same reason Reddit now requires paid access to their information; there’s money in selling training material to AI companies.

🍎Apple’s new Mac chip is fueled by AI

What happened: Apple’s about to introduce their M4 lineup of Macs. The M4 chip is primary designed to enhance AI processing.
The details:
The lineup is expected to be officially announced later this year.
The chips will reportedly be capable of completing AI tasks without relying on the cloud.
We know of three categories of M4 chips: the low-level Donan, high-end Brava, and top-end Hidra.
The entry-level Donan will power the Mac-mini and Macbook Pro models.
Brava will power the upgraded versions of those models.
Microsoft is also creating AI chips for their PCs.
Why it matters: MacOS and IOS are about to receive major AI overhauls. Make no mistake, local AI chips are the future of home computers. This will eventually be how we integrate AI into our daily workflow. Hopefully these chips start off on good footing.

🏥AI is coming to Healthcare

I think I’ll check out, thanks.
What happened: AI companies are desperate to penetrate the Healthcare industry (all that money 💰). And they’re succeeding, with many AI tools now handling patient intake, analyzing health data, and automating tasks. But there’s some serious skepticism too.
The details:
AI tools can already analyze and diagnose patients.
AI is already used to determine which patients should be treated first (pro tip: always say you have chest pain, it bumps you up).
Only about half of U.S. consumers believe AI can significantly improve healthcare.
Some big players are involved in making AI tools for Healthcare:
Amazon's AWS with undisclosed partners.
Microsoft Azure with Providence.
Google Cloud and Highmark Health.
Healthcare officials are skeptical AI is ready for prime time. The margin for error in live environments is small.
Why this matters: This reminds me of the UK’s recent alarm over big tech’s grip on AI. It’s also a sign things are moving too fast. Imagine a medical AI hallucinates and recommends the wrong dosage, and the nurse (for whatever reason) doesn’t double check the medicine. AI needs to perform much better in a medical environment.

🤔Which doctor is real?

Maybe?

Hmmmm….

The most realistic.

Anime?

Looks pretty real to me.
Hint: (None of them are…)
