We have darker news today. From Sony cutting costs in future films by using AI, to AI replacing us all, it seems the news of the day is AI will replace us.

šŸ¤– Nvidia’s next AI chips

Nvidia CEO Jensen made billions of dollars this year alone.

What happened: Nvidia made quite a few reveals on Sunday, including when they plan to release the next generation of AI chips.

The details:

  • Their next generation of AI chip platform is called ā€œRubinā€ and will be released in 2026.

  • The new CPU will be called Versa.

  • Graphics chips will feature next-generation high-bandwidth memory from SK Hynix, Micron, and Samsung.

  • Nvidia plans to release a new family of AI chips annually, accelerating from the previous biannual schedule.

  • Nvidia’s stock closed at a record high last month at 1,153.76. 🫢

  • Nvidia dominates about 80% of the AI chip market. And most big tech companies are building massive datacenters powered by Nvidia’s chips. (Expect their stock to rise even higher.)

Why it matters: Nvidia is here to stay. Their stock is a reflection of their domination in the market. But I don’t think their stock has finished growing yet.

šŸ’° Sony will use AI to cut film costs

Source: Sony Pictures

What happened: It’s starting. SPE CEO Tony Vinciquerra expressed his desire to use AI to cut filmmaking costs at a recent investor event.

The details:

  • Tony acknowledged the recent 8-month strikes over AI usage in the industry. But… he doesn’t care. AI is too lucrative to avoid just because of strikes.

  • Tony suggested the next ā€œSpider-Verseā€ animated film would use new animation styles thanks to AI.

  • This includes more than just video generation. AI can be used in animating character, creating 3D assets, and might someday combine with 3D programs like Unreal Engine or Cinema 4D to create entire scenes in minutes.

  • OpenAI’s Sora is planned to come this year. There’s also Midjourney’s rumored video generator and Chinese competitor Vidu.

  • Pure video generation is likely to be much more expensive than image generation.

Why it matters: Expect studios big and small to use AI for animated films and live action. I strongly believe AI will open the door to smaller studios/independents who will finally be capable of creating projects on the scale of big studios. The bad news? This will hit Hollywood jobs hard.

šŸ¤” The Godfather of AI thinks we’re doomed

Hinton himself.

What happened: Geoffrey Hinton, sometimes called the Godfather of AI, warns that AI will inevitably surpass human intelligence and criticized the lack of safety measures in its development. He must be watching too much OpenAI coverage (my fault I guess).

The details:

  • Hinton believes AI surpassing human intelligence is inevitable.

  • To put it bluntly: he thinks the people developing AI right now are reckless. And there could be severe consequences.

  • His biggest concern is AI’s military applications, such as autonomous targeting systems. You can watch a video of that in action here.

  • Hinton quit his position at Google in 2023, expressing regret over his life’s work due to AI’s risks.

  • He also hates the lacking government regulation. Especially militarily (they’ll never regulate their own military use though).

Why this matters: His statements paint a dark picture. It’s true governments don’t care to regulate their own use of dangerous AI. And companies are running amok without any real governance. Even the EU’s groundbreaking laws might not be executed well. For him to regret helping advance AI means he thinks AI will harm humanity more than help it.

😵 Elon Musk and Anthropic employees think AI will replace literally everyone

I think most people agree with this. What about you?

What happened: Guess we’ll all be out of a job soon. AI has definitely taken over art, but Musk (at VivaTech) and Anthropic Chief of Staff, Avital Balwit, both believe AI will take everyone’s job. Including their own. (This is probably overhyped though.)

The details:

  • Elon Musk insists that everybody, regardless of blue collar or white collar job, will someday lose their job to AI. (I think he should specify the timeframe though.)

  • Balwit believes these are the last three to five years he will work before the AI he is helping create ultimately replaces him.

  • They both note the denial by knowledge workers and think these workers will be hit hard by job losses.

  • They think that jobs requiring human interaction and emotional intelligence might persist longer.

  • Musk specifically believes that some jobs will remain as hobbies… but otherwise they’ll all be replaced by AI.

  • Musk also fears a superhuman AI could emerge as early as next year.

Takeaway: Of course, this could also be a case of ā€œAI company executives hype up AIā€. But the sentiment is there. And for some careers… it’s all too true. With AGI right around the corner, it may be the case that Sam Altman’s 1 person billion dollar company could come true. But I don’t think the average person is looking forward to that day.
