šŸ‘€India walks back on recent AI restrictions

Source: GIPHY

What happened: If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. India is walking back 🚶 on their plans to severely restrict AI development after severe global backlash from AI companies and entrepreneurs, some calling the move a ā€œtravestyā€. Ouch. But a year ago India wouldn’t even touch AI. Now they join the EU is creating restrictions on its development.

The details:

  • Earlier this month India announced plans to restrict AI models.

  • The restriction required big AI companies to get government permission to launch new AI models.

  • India has now walked back on the restrictions thanks to global criticism.

  • Some restrictions remain in place, such as a ā€œconsent popupā€ required to warn users of unreliable AI output.

  • Critics ranged from entrepreneurs and investors to notable figures like Martin Casado of Andreessen Horowitz. (Basically rich and powerful people.)

  • Less than a year ago the ministry refused to regulate AI development at all.

  • This comes days after the EU announced plans to regulate the development of powerful AI.

Why it matters: India joins the EU is attempting to regulate AI from going out of control. They may have walked back less than a month in, but the intent is clear. It won’t be long before other countries jump on board the regulation bandwagon. A balance needs to had between allowing AI developers to roam free and outright stifling development. Something tells me the EU’s recent AI laws will inspire something similar in other countries.

The ā€œAIā€ Under Armour commercial

Under Armour released the ā€œworld’s first AI-powered sports commercialā€. And yeah, it’s getting some heat from creatives online. But not because it’s made with AI, rather the opposite. The ad relies on pre-made footage from other creatives instead of relying entirely on AI. As in… it wasn’t even AI generated. They lied for the hype and just made a commercial with reused assets (and minimal AI help) from other creators. The whole incident has upset a creative community that was already on edge from AI tools. What a mess.

Apple acquired DarwinAI, an AI startup specializing in manufacturing efficiency through vision-based technology. Their acquisition could help Apple introduce AI features into IOS 18 as they desperately try to keep up with their competitors.

āœ‹Gemini won’t answer election questions

I asked for ā€œpresidential candidates yelling at each other.ā€ Meanwhile ā€œtrump yelling at bidenā€ is banned. Good job Midjourney. You really stopped me.

What happened: Google’s scared of you’ll use AI to manipulate the elections! Actually the whole world is. And now Google won’t allow Gemini to answer questions related to elections in your country. Half of this is to skirt government scrutiny, the other half is to avoid blame if Gemini gives false information (which it does all the time).

Why this happened:

  • The concern? Weaponized misinformation during the elections.

  • The solution? Google has restricted Gemini’s ability to comment or answer questions about elections.

  • Gemini recently had an incident when it responded to a query about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • The incident may have contributed to India’s attempted AI regulations, which has prompted Google’s move as a response.

  • Governments worldwide are warning about deepfakes manipulating elections.

Why it matters: AI is trying hard not to need self regulation. The recent government laws are scaring AI companies, who want the freedom to make drastic breakthroughs.

And let’s not forget it’s harder to get AI to create political content now. Restrictions like this are scary because it dictates AI’s uses for us, rather than letting us choose AI’s usefulness ourselves.

If I had to give the AI’s a personality, I’d say ChatGPT is a stubborn kid who needs coercing to get what you want, while Gemini is a politically correct adult who can answer questions clearer, but doesn’t want to ā€œoffendā€ anyone.  Claude 3 is still in testing.

I asked for a black viking (this time) and got it. I don’t want AI companies telling me it’s not allowed.

Further details:

  • AI companies are eager to prove they can self regulate rather than be restricted by governments.

  • Google recently faced backlash over Gemini’s image generator including crazy political diversity, such as Indian Popes and Black Vikings.

😱AI discovers Prostate Cancer is more than one disease

Source: Javier Regueiro / Shutterstock

What happened: AI has helped make a breakthrough in medical research that could someday help cure prostate cancer. Research reveals that prostate cancer has two distinct subtypes fundamentally changing our understanding of the disease.

The details:

  • A research study used AI to analyze DNA samples.

  • The AI discovered there are two subtypes of prostate cancer.

  • The discovery could completely change how prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated.

  • The results encourage more AI use in medical research.

Why it matters: AI could cure cancer and develop treatments. Imagine the other diseases this could solve. AIDS and STDs, rare genetic conditions, you name it. The possibilities of AI use in the medical industry are infinite.

šŸ’°Copilot has GPT-4 Turbo now

The details:

  • All free Copilot users can access GPT-4 Turbo from OpenAI.

  • GPT-4 Turbo was previously only available to Copilot Pro users for $20 a month.

  • This makes normal ChatGPT outdated.

  • The move hints at the rumored upcoming GPT-4.5 Turbo update.

  • GPT Plus still has the advantage of custom GPTs for use.

Why you should care: First… it’s a good deal and offers better performance than normal GPT, and you get Copilot with it. I mean… it’s free. Who doesn’t like free?

Second… Microsoft’s move to add GPT-4 Turbo to their free tier could be a tell of what’s to come for the paid tier. Rumors are circulating that ChatGPT-4.5 Turbo will release this year. GPT-4.5 Turbo could become the absolute best AI model for a while, at least until the other models catch up.

And yet ā€œtrump wrestling in the mudā€ was banned.

Why does he have tho cigarettes?

Just for kicks, but you can actually type in ā€œMickey Mouseā€.
