Are AI pins the future of wearable tech? Not if you believe the scathing reviews. It’s less useful than that monstrosity of a headset made by Apple. But humanoid robots that don’t look freaky? That’s the future right there. Let’s see what’s in store for AI.

💣Viral reviews bombed Humane’s AI Pin

What happened: Reviews are powerful things. Marques Brownlee, known as MKBHD, gave Humane AI’s new AI pin a terrible review, stating it was “the worst product I’ve ever reviewed”. Other influencers agreed with Brownlee. And guess what? Critics believe these reviews could crush the early AI startup before they’ve even begun.
The details:
Humane’s AI pin is disappointingly mediocre despite plenty of hype from the AI and tech communities.
The device is expensive at $700 and an additional $25 per month.😳
The pin reportedly has poor battery life and ineffective features.
AI enthusiasts believe the viral negative reviews could potentially destroy Humane AI (and other young startups) before they’ve even released their first product.
This has sparked discussion within the wider tech industry about the responsibility of tech reviewers, since they have so much power over a large company’s success.
Why it matters: The AI pin may not sell very well thanks to these negative reviews. But it’s a reviewer’s job to honestly review a product. That’s the only responsibility they have. They don’t owe the company (who made a mediocre product) anything. I think it’s more interesting to see the feedback to the AI pin in general. These pins may not go very far.

Stanford University’s 2024 AI Index Report says AI is better than humans at most tasks now. Some examples include reading comprehension, image classification and competition-level mathematics. You know… all the things AI was always better at. Still, their report shows the scary growth of AI tools in a very short period of time.
🧠Amazon got an AI expert, Andrew Ng, on their board of directors. Ng, who founded AI Fund and has led AI teams at both Baidu and Google, replaces former MTV CEO Judy McGrath. This follows Amazon’s multi-billion dollar investments into AI startups like Anthropic.
Snapchat will watermark AI generated content in another attempt to self regulate and protect the public from deepfakes.

🦾Meta reveals their AI chip

What happened: Meta reveals the next step in their Meta Training and Interface Accelerator (MTIA). In english this is a chip designed to power AI for Meta’s systems.
The details:
The MTIA v2 will help power Meta’s ranking and recommendation systems for ads.
MTIA v2 offers more than double the compute and memory bandwidth compared to the first generation.
Utilizing cutting-edge 5nm technology, MTIA v2 operates at a higher frequency and includes significantly more gates and flops, indicating a robust increase in processing power.
In short, Meta’s AI functions (like chatbots) and ads are about to get a big upgrade.
Why it matters: This could dramatically increase the effectiveness of ads on Meta platforms (which are already pretty good). AI chips are the new hotness, and it’s likely every social media platform we use will have AI features built into the platform, such as image generation, voice cloning, image editing, video generation, and more. It’ll be a wild world on social platforms.

💰Canada invests billions into AI

What happened: Canada has announced a substantial $1.7 billion USD investment to strengthen its AI industry. This follows a long line of massive investments from governments into AI.
The details:
Canada is investing $1.7B into AI.
The investment is aimed at strengthening AI-focused institutions like the Canadian AI Safety Institute.
The move looks to intertwine industrial and AI policies together.
Some speculate AI regulations could follow soon.
Much of this investment is meant to help the government understand AI and its implications.
Why this matters: Let’s be honest, most governments are run by old people who have never used social media or AI chatbots. Their understanding of AI is fueled by fear and is limited to what the advisors tell them. Hopefully this funds a clearer understanding of AI so proper laws can be made.

🤖Boston Dynamics goes electric with new Atlas model

Source: Boston Dynamics
What happened: Boston Dynamics revealed the new version of their Atlas robot, moving from hydraulics to all electric. The “All New Atlas” is more agile than its counterpart. But can it do backflips? 🤔
The details:
The move to electric makes the New Atlas is much quieter.
The New Atlas has a more streamlined, humanoid appearance. No more twisty cables sticking out like a sore thumb.
Boston Dynamics wishes to eventually enter the commercial space with their robots.
New Atlas can turn its head and torso independently. It can even move from a prone to a standing position.
Takeaway: Companies like Boston Dynamics want robots like these to be in every home, warehouse, and restaurant. While that’s a long ways off, models like these are way more appealing to the eye. I’d prefer robots like this over creepy humanoid faces.
