OpenAI and Google are really neck to neck with their releases. Both of their AI models updated within 12 hours, meanwhile OpenAI is creating another Q* story by firing two top researchers.

🤯Everybody released new AI models at once

What happened: OpenAI, Google, and French startup Mistral all unveiled new AI models within a tight 12-hour window. You can now use Gemini Pro 1.5 and ChatGPT-4.5 Turbo. Talk about a close competition.

The details: 

• Google launched Gemini Pro 1.5 in over 180 countries. You can access it here. It’s a substantial improvement in all areas.

• Shortly after, OpenAI released GPT-4 Turbo for all paid GPT subscribers.

• GPT-4 Turbo includes speed improvements and larger input context windows of up to 128,000 tokens ( about 300 pages).

• GPT-4 Turbo also has vision capabilities, allowing it to understand images and audio. Developers can callback to this vision feature.

• Mistral dropped Mixtral 8x22B, using an open-source model.

• Meta's upcoming AI model, Llama 3, is expected to launch in a few weeks.

Why it matters: Something new releases literally everyday. The more competition, the better for users like us who rely on AI for productivity. As most users stick with ChatGPT, any new release is welcome. Let’s hope GPT-5 releases this year.

OpenAI fired two researchers for leaking to the OA board. Rumors say it’s because of Q*, the rumored AGI or “threat to humanity” which OpenAI is developing. There’s limited info for now but this is… tantalizing. (I’ll report more on this as more info comes out.)

Humane just launched their AI pin. The Ai Pin utilizes various large language models (LLMs) to perform tasks, aiming to offer the best platform for each job. Basically a phone-less AI assistant. It also costs $699 (ouch). But eventually tech like this will be built into phones, watches, and made more affordable.

🚨UK anti-trust officer blows alarm over AI

What happened: A few big tech companies control all of AI. And the UK isn’t happy about it. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued a warning about the dominance of a few big tech companies owning most of AI. And yeah, you know who these companies are…

The details:

• The CMA identified six major players in AI, "GAMMA". It’s a funny name for Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple. Nvidia too, but sadly they don’t fit in the name.

• The warning focuses on the risks of having all powerful AI in the hands of a few big companies.

• CMA CEO Sarah Cardell highlighted the risk of these companies shaping markets to their own benefit.

• Partnerships between the tech giants could strengthen their monopolies.

• There are still open source solutions, but they lag behind developments by big companies.

Why it matters: Scary stuff. And it’s very true. A few companies rule the roost. While smaller companies like Stability AI or Anthropic either collapse or get absorbed into the big companies. It paints a… bleak picture for the future of AI. Maybe new laws can straighten this out.

🥊US fights China by investing $6.6B into Arizona chip company

What happened: The U.S. Department of Commerce plans to invest $6.6 billion in a new semiconductor manufacturing facility for TSMC in Arizona. And it’s all about weening off reliance on China (and Taiwan) for chip development.

The details: 

• The proposed facility will focus on advanced 2nm chip architectures, essential for AI and 5G.

• The investment is part of the CHIPS and Science Act, aiming to bolster U.S. domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

• Most of our computer chips come from China and Taiwan. Taiwan has recently been threatened with a Chinese invasion.

• According to reports, China’s AI development is two years behind the US. And there’s recently been AI corporate espionage from Chinese companies.

Why this matters: Having vital computer chips manufactured by a hostile country isn’t a good idea. You don’t know what those chips could do. AI has become such a big topic that it’s expanded into the geopolitical sphere.

🎧Udio is badass at making music 

Suno has some competition.

Udio has gotten really good. Like, astonishingly good.

Voices sound much better than Suno to me.

Here’s a quick step by step to create your first song.

1. Make an account.

2. Click “My Creations”

3. At the top you’ll see where you can enter a prompt.

4. Clicking “Custom” will allow you to add your own lyrics. The AI will still modify or add lyrics as needed.

5. On the top right you’ll see “Manual Mode”. Clicking this will allow you to completely control the lyrics of the song, so no AI generated lyrics.

6. Make sure to specify your music style in the main prompt box at the top.
