The world is panicking over AI right now. From jobs to governments. Everyone knows AI is the future of tech, and they all want a piece. You’ll see that here today as Microsoft attempts to add AI to windows computers everywhere. But there are few truly open source AIs for the benefit of humanity. Grok is one open source AI, and they just announced their latest update.

  • xAI announces Grok 1.5 for X users.

  • Biometric hand scans come to phone users.

  • Windows will have AI built-in soon.

  • Google launches AI Accelerator program.

🤖Musk and xAI announces Grok 1.5

Source: xAI

What happened: Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, just announced Grok 1.5, an update to their open-source AI model. Unfortunately it still lags behind ChatGPT and Claude 3.

The details:

  • Grok-1.5 will soon be available to testers on X (can we just call it Twitter?).

  • The update features a huge context length of 128,000 tokens.

  • Benchmarks show Grok 1.5 shines brightest at math and coding.

  • Grok still falls behind ChatGPT and Claude 3 at problem solving despite the update’s progress.

Why it matters: Grok remains open source and free to the public. Open source AI is important because right now a few big companies control or partly own most major AI players. The future of AI is too important for a few hands to hold all the cards. Grok still lags behind other models, but the progress made here is promising. Hopefully it matches the latest AI models someday.

That’s Sam Bankman-Fried on the middle right. Poor guy 😂

Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, just got a sentence of 25 years in prison. His whole story is… wildly entertaining. He once owned a crypto empire and was a billionaire. Now his empire has collapsed and he’s being charge with numerous offenses, including money laundering. Something tells me he won’t have a good time there.

Google launches an AI accelerator program for new AI startups called Google Accelerator (very creative). The program dedicates $20 million in grants to support 21 nonprofits. These organizations will develop AI tools to aid in areas like student feedback, language translation for refugees, and public benefits enrollment.

Microsoft’s Bing Chief, Mikhail Parakhin, is leaving the role and will report to Microsoft’s CTO. This comes as part of the shakeup at Microsoft after they poached Inflection’s founders and made them a new AI team. Microsoft is going hard into AI. Literally everyone is betting their futures on it.

Interesting Situation: Stability isn’t so stable anymore. They’ve had numerous problems with profitability, funding, and now leadership issues. With CEO and founder, Emad Mostaque, leaving the company, the future of Stability AI is unclear. Investors are beginning to worry despite their $1B valuation from 2022. This goes to show how unstable (ok I’ll stop) the AI industry is for new companies. What’s baffling is the expectation of profits so early when these companies are making breakthroughs everyday.

👋Amazon extends biometric scans to phones

Source: Amazon

What happened: It’s happening. Biometrics are real. Thanks to generative AI, Amazon can now scan your palm to recognize your person. This will replace the need for passwords and credit cards… but it’s scary as hell 😂. Welcome to the future.

The details:

  • Amazon’s One app is out for phones right now, allowing you to snap a picture of your palm to sign up. You needed to visit a physical location before.

  • The scan uses generative AI to analyze your palm vein structure to ID you.

  • Select Amazon affiliates use the tech, like Whole Foods, airports, and even some sporting stadiums.

  • This has sparked privacy concerns over biometric data, but Amazon claims the data is encrypted and safely secured. 🤔

  • The hand scan proves your age, logs you into your account, and charges your card.

Why it matters: Biometrics are the direction future tech is going. iPhones essentially use facial biometrics to unlock phones. But just because Amazon claims the data is secure doesn’t mean people (including myself) are just going to hand over their palm images. You can get a new password, but not a new palm print.

🤯Microsoft wants Copilot to run locally on PCs

What happened: Microsoft wants AI on your home PC. AI features will now be baked into Windows as part their “AI PC” initiative starting this year.

The details:

  • Microsoft's new AI PCs will come with NPUs to run AI models right on your computer and keep your info private.

  • These new PCs will run Copilot locally (basically a version of ChatGPT).

  • Keyboards will come with a separate Copilot key.

  • Intel and Qualcomm are leading the charge to develop these AI NPUs.

  • Intel says PCs will need to be extremely powerful to run AI up to standards. About 40 trillion operations per second (geez).

Why this matters: Everything will have AI functions built in this year. Microsoft’s move matches Apple, who's rumored to be integrating AI into their IOS 18 update this year. According to studies, only 34% of people know they are using AI right now. Will these new features be as seamless?

I wonder if these AI’s will automatically update in the middle of important work like Windows?

🧠Nvidia’s Free course on AI

Nvidia is the backbone of the AI industry. Their chips are the literal brain of AI supercomputers.

And they have 16 free courses on AI. Here are two of the best to start from:

  1. Generative AI Explained. Goes over the basics of what Gen AI is and how it works.

  2. Building A Brain in 10 Minutes. Teaches how LLMs are built and function.

Be warned some of these can be long and technical. They are not for the faint of heart or average user.

🎥I need a movie of this…
