🄊Anthropic announces Claude 3 to compete with ChatGPT

Source: Antropic

What happened: Anthropic just announced (and released) their new AI model Claude 3, and claims it has a 100 IQ and surpasses GPT4. But how good is it really?

The details:

  • Claude comes in three models… Haiku, Sonnet and Opus.

  • The most powerful model is Opus.

  • Claude claims Opus has undergraduate level expert knowledge, graduate level expert reasoning, and basic mathematics.

  • Opus costs $20 a month for individuals.

  • The business price is expensive at $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens (that’s more than ChatGPT and other AI models.)

  • Claude 3 Sonnet is a free version that you can check out right now.

Why it matters: Competition is a good thing. While ChatGPT has it’s own aces hiding behind the scenes, more LLM models competing for our attention helps advance AI as a whole. Claude needs more testing to prove its place, but this could be the ideal tool for someone reading this.

Source: Antropic

So is it better than ChatGPT?

  • NO, but it’s different… and promising.

  • Claude looks promising for code generation, but lacks basic features like function calling.

  • Does very well with image processing.

  • Claude needs improvements with advanced mathematics and logical reasoning.

  • It easily becomes confused when dealing with impossible questions.

  • Handles creative prompts impressively well.

  • It’s a great start to a new AI model with a promising future. Keep an eye on it.

Takeaway: All of these AI models are starting to remind me of movie streaming. Yeah it was cheaper to just use Netflix at the start, but eventually Hulu and Amazon came along… then streaming became as expensive as cable.

The company who builds an efficient and cheap GPT4 (especially for API access) will be the king of AI.

Let me make this clear, you don’t need every AI model. You need a select few that are good at the job you need to get done. That’s it. I think ChatGPT does more than enough for general consumers and workers.

Robots are coming to take your jobs!

Source: South Park

OpenAI are trying to fit their AI into physical robots, terminator style. This comes as part of a deal with robotics startup Figure; a little startup company with no commercial products, who has convinced influential tech companies to back their vision of shipping humanoid robots all across the world. The deal will allow OpenAI's AI models to inhabit the physical world for the first time and will help the AI model to understand human environments (yay or scary?). Don’t worry though, I’m sure Musk will beat them to it šŸ™„.

Klarna froze hiring because of AI, now says AI does the job of 700 employees. Yes, the biggest fear most people have about AI is coming true (partly). AI is taking jobs. Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski told OpenAI's Sam Altman he wanted to become the group's ā€œfavorite guinea pig.ā€ Okay Sebastian. And Klarna isn’t the only one. Big companies like IBM are also planning hiring freezes because of AI.

AI tools may be eroding younger software developer’s skills. As more jobs are made efficient (or outdated) thanks to AI, many software developers are losing their skills because of an over reliance on AI doing the work for them. This is a bit of a pickle, since AI does make the job more efficient, but you don’t want to become reliant on it entirely.

šŸŽ§ChatGPT has a voice now

Source: TechRadar

What happened: ChatGPT now has a ā€œread aloudā€ button. This in light of all the controversy and drama OpenAI has roused up recently.

The details:

  • You can choose from several voices to read.

  • The feature improves multitasking as you can listen to ChatGPT while doing other things.

  • Of course this is helpful for people with reading disabilities or sight problems.

  • It can finally read you AI-generated bedtime stories in a sexy robotic accent.

Why it matters: ChatGPT is the most accessible and popular AI model with most people. While we interact with AI everyday (often unknowingly), ChatGPT is the face of AI to most consumers right now. This is another step in pushing AI towards the masses.

How to use:

  • Web Version: A speaker icon should appear below the generated text when the feature is available.

  • Mobile App: Tap and hold the generated text. The Read Aloud feature will be in the pop-up menu.

  • Player: An audio player appears with controls for play, pause, rewind, and fast forward.

  • Voice Selection: Under Settings, you can often select your preferred voice.

šŸŽRumors circulate about Sam Altman’s brief departure last year

Source: The Washington Post

What happened: Sam Altman’s brief removal as CEO of OpenAI last year was very sudden and unexpe

cted for those of us on the outside. But insider reports indicate OpenAI's CTO, Mira Murati, raised concerns about Altman's leadership to the board and shared a private memo detailing her issues. This contributed to the board's decision to remove him.

The details:

  • OpenAI cofounder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, cited a history of manipulative behavior by Altman and an occasionally toxic work environment.

  • Many employees threatened to quit during Altman's removal.

  • Microsoft immediately attempted to hire Altman and offered to hire any remaining OpenAI staff.

  • The board was concerned about Altman's control of the OpenAI Startup Fund and his use of it to potentially bypass the nonprofit governance structure.

  • An external law firm is investigating the events leading up to the ouster.

Why it matters: There’s definitely something fishy going on behind the scenes at OpenAI. Their progress on AI and the rumors concerning Q* (I’ll cover that more later) are issues that affect the world. Something tells me the drama from last year isn’t over yet and we’ll see some fallout as a result.

Further details:

  • The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) is investigating OpenAI.

  • They began their investigation when Sam Altman was removed last year.

  • As one of the (supposed) reasons for his removal the board cited Altman's lack of transparency regarding his plans to raise money for an AI chip project from Middle Eastern investors.

🧠Strategies to survive the AI revolution

The AI revolution is going to take over a lot of jobs and leave the rest requiring fewer people. So take heed while you’ve got the chance and prepare your skillset and career.

5 Strategies to Survive AI:

  • Embrace new AI technology: AI can be a powerful tool to help us work more efficiently and effectively. By learning to use AI tools, we can stay ahead of the curve and avoid being replaced by them.

  • Invest in AI skills: AI will continue to evolve, so you must be willing to continuously learn new skills. And it’s best to start right now while you’re ahead of the curve. Take some courses, learn how to prompt, and learn new skills.

  • Be prepared to change: Don’t get stuck on one way of doing things. AI moves fast and you’ll need to adapt. Just because you use AI in one way right now doesn’t mean the task will stay that way. Stay adaptable.

  • Learn soft skills: Communication, people skills, and building rapport. These elements can’t be replicated by AI anytime soon. A robot nurse might be efficient, but wouldn’t you rather have a human nurse you could talk to? Not to mention bosses are likelier to keep you around if they actually like you (shocking I know).

  • Look for new jobs: Just like every revolution before, AI will eliminate and reduce some jobs, while creating others. People who don’t think so have never run a business. Every time you solve one problem, another one is created from the old solution in a never ending cycle. Look for new problems and you will find your new opportunities.

These are pretty basic concept, but they go a long way. Even just believing you can do something to keep your job and skillset sharp will work wonders.
