🤖China’s new Robot is blowing minds🤯

The Astribot

What happened: China’s coming out of left field with a banger robot. In their video demo, Chinese company Stardust revealed their robot, the Astribot S1. And it’s possibly more impressive than any robots in the west. (Seriously, watch their video. It’s impressive.)

The details:

  • The Astribot S1 performs tasks with precision and speed that are unparalleled by Western developers.

  • The S1 robot features a cutting-edge motor transmission system, which integrates multiple important features like sensing and control into one complex system.

  • I kid you not… it’s the most impressive robot we’ve seen.

  • The recent video has left the AI and robotics world buzzing.

  • According to recent reports, China’s AI and robotics efforts were at least 2 years behind the West. But now… that’s starting to feel less true. What could have changed?

Some of the tasks the robot does:

  • Quickly and carefully picks up objects and packs them neatly into a drawer.

  • Peels the skin off of a vegetable.

  • Makes toast by f****** flipping it into the air before catching it again. 😳

  • Carefully unscrews a bottle-cap 🫠.

  • Accurately hammers in the legs of a wooden stool.

  • Waters a plant 🪴.

  • Operate household devices, like vacuums, and use them.

Why it matters: This is the most impressive robot I’ve ever seen. For once I can imagine seeing this robot as a house-maid. A real robot to cook and clean in daily life. In a few years this could become a real product like the Apple Vision. However they only showed household tasks, not industrial/warehouse tasks. That’s where the real money is.

📢A gym teacher tried to use AI voices to get his boss fired

What happened: A Baltimore high school is controversially using AI to clone the voices of their staff for announcements. And… the gym teacher tried to use this to get his boss fired. Typical.

The details:

  • The gym teacher, Dazhon Darien, used the principle’s AI clone to say racist slurs over the high school intercom in an attempt to get him fired.

  • The principal was temporarily suspended because of the voice, and police had to guard his house as the public grew angry at him.

  • Dazhon Darien was arrested attempting to board a plane with a gun.

  • We don’t know what AI cloning tech he used.

  • The US has yet to fully pass any AI laws to protect the public from Deepfakes.

Why it matters: This is another Canary in the Coal mine. Miners used to use canaries in the coal mines. They were much more sensitive to the toxic gases in the air than humans, so they’d die before it became dangerous for humans. In other words, a dead canary was a warning sign. Unless specific laws are passed, expect AI deepfakes of ex-lovers, disliked bosses, and celebrities.

The list of names on Homeland Security’s list. It’s literally people who want complete freedom from regulation.

💪 Homeland security announced the AI Safety and Security Board. There’s a lot of big list of names on the list. But they’re all from the tech industry. Homeland Security is bringing on big tech CEOs of the companies who want to be free to do whatever they want. Frankly, it’s stupid. Worth noting that Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are both absent from the list. If you’re gonna include these other tech names, might as well bring them along too.

🥊 Drake is getting sued over dragging Tupac back from the dead with AI. Drake used Tupac’s voice in “Taylor Made” to diss Kendrick Lamar, and he did so without the consent of the Tupac estate. Now they’re suing him (rightfully). Not that consent would have made a difference, seeing as Tupac himself can’t say yes or no to anything. Leave the man in peace.

📲OpenAI will bring AI to iPhone

What happened: Apple’s a bit behind on the AI game. A while ago Apple was in talks with OpenAI to create AI for iPhone. Then reports say they switched to Google. Well, it’s back to OpenAI for now.

The details:

  • OpenAI is reportedly creating AI for IOS.

  • Apple had been in talks with OpenAI earlier this year. The deal fell through and switched to Google. Now it’s back to OpenAI.

  • The partnership is meant to introduce AI to IOS quickly, despite Apple not having their own AI ready yet.

  • It’s been massively rumored that IOS 18 will heavily feature AI.

  • The next IOS update is expected to be announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10.

Why this matters: Apple is scrambling to catch up. But AI built into your iPhone in an innovative way would change how we use AI in daily life. Right now ChatGPT is the face of AI. If Apple can pull off a good AI experience on IOS, it could change how the public views AI overall. (Hint: The public currently hates and fears AI.)

🎥China’s Sora competitor rocks the boat

What happened: China just keeps surprising us. China just revealed their Sora competitor, Vidu. It’s an AI which generates videos from scratch using a simple prompt.

The details:

  • Vidu can create 16-second video clips at 1080p with a single click.

  • Vidu utilizes the novel U-ViT architecture, combining Diffusion and Transformer techniques to support one-click generation of high-definition videos.

  • Vidu is limited to 16 second clips, while Sora is limited to 60 seconds. However this is still a massive step up from an unknown company.

  • Sora is OpenAI’s video generation tool, which is also being pitched to Hollywood. This is a direct competitor to Sora.

Takeaway: China is catching up on AI. While Vidu has some limitations, it’s a resounding success. It’s also an early tech. AI generated video will eventually create much more than 16/60 second clips. It will also likely be much more expensive.
