OpenAI just dropped some bombs in their live event, with several big announcements that are sure to keep the competition sweating. And they did this right before Google’s own AI event Tuesday (when you’re reading this). Here’s everything that happened.

🤯Announcements from OpenAI’s event

OpenAI just had a livestream where they dropped some big bombs on the AI world.

The details: 

• ChatGPT-4o is their latest model, capable of understanding text, images, and voice. It’s out right now and free for all users. This model can also be used by third party developers. We have more details on GPT-4o further below.

• Free users will now have access to more features. This is part of OpenAI trying to become more “open” and “for humanity” again.

• An official ChatGPT desktop app is incoming. It promises to read and understand what’s on your screen, have a full voice mode, and the rest of the typical ChatGPT features built into your machine. The desktop app will release for Mac first. The Windows app will release later this year. (Guess the Apple Cult wins again… btw I’m part of that cult.)

• GPT Plus users get access to the desktop app first, starting today. (There’s a lot of scam links going around, here’s a good link to download it.)

• A new look and feel for ChatGPT’s web app. Featuring a new homescreen and message layout.

• Developers can use DALL-E in their API access. 

• Small performance upgrades to GPT-3.5 Turbo and 4 Turbo.

• ChatGPT’s new face is a literal… black hole. This is part of OpenAI’s minimalist design philosophy. No distractions. Even if it does look like Hal 9000.

🌍 Anthropic is expanding to Europe and raising more money. This includes multilingual support and an API extension into Europe. Unlike OpenAI, Anthropic mostly focuses on Enterprise level customers. This differentiates them from OpenAI, which is needed in Europe, since Claude 3 is not openly welcomed there.

🤓 Google Cloud is partnering with Airtel to bring AI to Indian businesses. Airtel is India’s second largest telecom operator, so this is a big partnership. Some of the things they’ll provide to businesses: spotting trends with location analysis, predictive capabilities, market assessment, site selection, asset tracking, and you name it. 

💣ChatGPT-4o is out, here’s the details

What happened: You can now use ChatGPT-4o for free. It’s OpenAI’s latest, most advanced AI model. And thanks to it being multimodal, it’s literally a full blown AI assistant capable of near human levels of conversation.

The details:

• The big feature: GPT-4o can process and reason with text, audio, and visual inputs simultaneously. It is multimodal.

  • This means you can talk to it as it’s looking at your screen, and it’ll talk back about what it’s seeing.

  • For example: In this example video, GPT-4o is speaking to a student, helping them with their homework while looking at the mathematical problem on the screen.

• The model can speak back very naturally. It’s almost creepy how human it sounds.

• Not all of 4o’s features are available yet. They’ll be dished out over time as they go through more testing. For now 4o is a faster, smarter version of GPT-4 Turbo.

• The model is available for free for all users. Paid users will gain extra credits (basically you can use it more before getting locked out). Paid users get 5x the messages.

• GPT-4o is trained on audio, text and visual data from the start, and uses them all from a single neural network.

• GPT-4o is a straight upgrade in performance over GPT-4 Turbo. 4o is now the fastest and smartest AI model currently available from OpenAI.

• This is not replacing any previous models, you can still use those if you prefer.

• The “o” stands for “omni”, because the model uses all forms of communication; visual, audio and text.

• Unlike GPT-4 Turbo, which has a voice to text prompt feature, GPT-4o understands your voice directly. This is actually a big deal in creating a more conversational AI.

• The model is also more multilingual too, with enhanced performance in over 50 languages.

• Custom GPTs will eventually switch to using GPT-4o. This will happen sometime later.

• GPT-4o is available to third party developers and is less expensive than 4 Turbo. 

• The introduction of the Assistants API allows developers to create agent-like experiences with persistent threads, code interpretation, retrieval of external data, and function calling.

• The rumors for the past few days said OpenAI’s announcement would compete directly with Google Search.

Why it matters: This is the biggest news in AI so far this year. ChatGPT is the face of AI to the public. And this just brought a next level AI assistant into everyone’s hands. This is what Siri wants to be. And this gives credence to the reports about OpenAI developing AI for IOS 18’s update this year.

Google’s Next Move:

• Tuesday (the day you’re reading this) is when Google has their own AI event. This will be their time to strike back and give us that “wow” moment.

👋Soundhorn is teaming up with Perplexity

What happened: Despite the major ChatGPT news today, Perplexity, one of the best AI powered search tools (it’s better than Google), just announced a partnership with Soundhorn to bring voice to their AI.

The details: 

• Soundhorn will integrate Perplexity's conversational AI-powered answer engine into SoundHound’s Chat AI assistant.

• This essentially creates a voice powered AI-assistant.

• Yes, this means the AI assistant is a separate entity from Perplexity. It’s just using Perplexity’s API.

• This was originally supposed to be the first AI assistant in the world with generative AI abilities. That isn’t the case anymore, but this is still remarkable progress.

Why this matters: I know a lot of people use Perplexity instead of Google for information gathering. Time will tell who ends up on the chopping block, but I think Perplexity will stay around. Integrating them with an AI assistant is a smart choice.
