Have you ever used AI to learn something? One of the great benefits to using AI to learn skills is how individualized the learning can be. And the problems are typical AI nonsense, usually an issue with reasoning and memory. But there’s infinite potential here. Now there’s another AI startup eager to move AI into classrooms.

✏️ AI startup promises to change education

Source: Eureka. Oh and the girl has three hands. So professional.

What happened:Andrej Karpathy, former AI head at Tesla and researcher at OpenAI, just announced his new AI startup Eureka Labs. The startup aims to integrate AI teaching assistants more naturally into classrooms.

The details:

  • The goal is to create AI “teaching assistants” to make AI based learning more natural. These AI personalities would work alongside teachers, not replace them.

  • Then it gets creepy. Karpathy sees a potential future where AI assistants are based on real life people

  • It’s currently unclear if Eureka is self funded or backed by investors.

Why it matters: AI is definitely the future of school. Especially in developing countries, where higher education, teachers and good schools are in shorter supply (there’s fierce competition). Unlike teachers, AI can teach everyone at the same time and make the education specific to the individual. It’s also relatively inexpensive.

🔥Microsoft published a paper on giving AI a spreadsheet upgrade. It’s a new framework, called SpreadsheetLLM, to better help AI understand and use spreadsheets. The LLM can understand the variables, tables, and recognize both structured and unstructured data within the spreadsheet. Considering how important spreadsheets are in the workplace, this could be a really big deal.

📱Claude is available for Android now. On top of that, Anthropic has doubled the max output token limit for Claude 3.5 Sonnet from 4096 to 8192 in the Anthropic API. “Just add the header "anthropic-beta": "max-tokens-3-5-sonnet-2024-07-15" to your API calls.”

🎧 Youtube Music adds AI features

What happened: Ever had a song stuck in your head but you can’t find it? Maybe you can hum the chorus or you sorta know the beat. Well now Youtube Music can find the song for you

The details:

  • Users can now search for songs by singing, humming, or playing a song. The AI will then search for whatever song’s been stuck in your head.

  • Youtube is testing an AI-generated conversational radio for Premium members.

  • To use the new feature just tap the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner, then the waveform button to use the feature.

Takeaway: I’m glad to see useful new features being added. But I’m skeptical about this AI-generated radio. Sounds very dull.

💰 AI could add billions to UK economy

What happened:Workday’s new study revealed that AI could significantly enhance productivity for UK businesses, potentially adding £119 billion to the economy. Here’s what they found:

The details:

  • AI could add £119 to the UK economy and save 7.9 billion employee hours annually.

  • Business leaders could save 1,117 hours per year.

  • Individual employees could reclaim 737 hours annually.

  • The UK is currently in a productivity and economic slump, with UK productivity 24% below pre-2008 projections.

  • Businesses across the world remain very wary of adopting AI too soon (and too late). There’s a lot of infrastructure that has to be moved around in a big company, and AI is still changing wildly.

Why this matters: I’m skeptical on the exact hourly statements, but yes, AI will boost productivity and increase the country’s output. That’s inevitable. It’s important to note the hours saved will not equal more time off.
