Wow! Tons of news today. And most of it revolves around deepfakes (gasp). From musical deepfakes to national laws, the fear of AI grows with every day. Sexual deepfakes may soon become a criminal offense even without sharing them.

🚔UK will criminalize sexual deepfakes

What happened: Creating sexually explicit images without consent may soon be a criminal offense in the UK.
The details:
The law would make it a criminal offense to create sexual deepfakes without a person’s consent.
The law is currently circulating through parliament (it will likely pass though).
Punishments include jail-time and criminal records.
The law is about deepfake creation, not just sharing. It will apply regardless of whether they share the image or not.
The general public despise deepfakes and agrees with the law; A Glamour UK survey indicated that 91% of readers view deepfake technology as a threat to women's safety.
Why it matters: Deepfakes are one of the biggest fears with AI. Yes, job losses are a big concern too. But we live in an age of information and media. When that media can be faked so easily by someone pretending to be anyone else, then you have a cocktail for trouble. Let’s hope this sets a precident for other countries.

As of April 16 market close.

Amazon has an AI playlist feature to match Spotify’s own. "Maestro" lets users create playlists through spoken or written prompts, including emojis. It will be available to select U.S. users. Obviously the goal is to have a “perfect” music playlist for your mood, but time will tell how good this is.
Tesla just laid off 14,000 employees. The cut reduces their workforce over 10%. Musk cited role duplication as the reason, saying the company will be leaner and hungrier after the cuts. The company faced setbacks including attacks affecting shipments and an arson incident at its Berlin factory. Tesla lost a significant share price following the announcement.
OpenAI just opened their Tokyo branch office. The branch will focus on optimizing GPT for the Japanese language. The office is ed by Tadao Nagasaki, will pursue enterprise growth, building on existing partnerships with major Japanese companies like Daikin, Rakuten, and Toyota. This peculiarly matches the US’s recent AI focused alliance with Japan. Perhaps that has some effect here? (All I want is some awesome Anime translations please.)

🙌Meta reviews AI generated sexual content policies

What happened: More sexual deepfake news. Meta’s Oversight Board is reviewing their policies toward AI generated sexual content. This kickstarted after two celebrities had AI generated porn deepfakes circulating on Meta and Instagram. Yeah, big tech can’t even take down porn, so how will they fight other deepfakes?
The details:
Two female celebrities recently had their sexual deepfakes circulating on Instagram and Facebook, kickstarting this policy review.
While Meta took down images of the US celebrity, the Indian celebrity’s image was only taken down after the Oversight Board got involved.
The review will determine Meta’s capability in responding to sexual AI generated content. (Don’t expect much.)
Several deepfakes of celebrities in India have circulated on Meta, including Rashmika Mandanna and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
Expect to see more deepfakes of celebrities and known figures. It’s inevitable.
Why it matters: Remember that big AI companies don’t want government regulation. They want to regulate themselves. But deepfakes and big events like this bring legislative attention to Big Tech’s grip on AI. It remains to be seen how anyone can fight against deepfakes. They’re hard to spot, and soon they’ll be indistinguishable from the real thing. I don’t think big tech has a real answer.

🤔No one knows if this song is from Drake or AI

Can the real Drake please stand up?
What happened: Gotta stick with the theme, right? Drake’s new song just “leaked”… and nobody knows if it’s a real song or AI generated. But if that’s the case… what will be the point in music celebrities anyway?
The details:
A new song, “Push Ups” was leaked early, causing fans to argue if the song is AI generated.
"Push Ups" directly targets several prominent figures in the music industry, including pointed remarks at Metro Boomin.
The voice on the track resembles Drake's but contains minor glitches, leading to debates about its authenticity.
Last year similar AI songs used Drake's voice and were taken down by his label.
There have been tons of “deepfake” rap songs circulating on social media, creating doubts to any song’s authenticity.
Why this matters: If you need to debate if the song is legit or not… then it’s begun to no longer matter. If this song is AI generated, then it’s good enough (already) to make people think it could be the real Drake. If it’s real, then AI generated music is (again) good enough to make us doubt the song’s authenticity. I mean… what’s the difference at that point aside from branding?
AI generated music is new. It’s the equivalent of Midjourney drawing six fingered hands a year ago. I have to wonder how long until AI music takes over the industry.

🎥Adobe explores AI in videos and Premiere Pro

Note: NOT a real image, this is AI generated.
What happened: Adobe just announced third party tools will be coming to Premiere Pro. That includes OpenAI’s Sora, which recently caused a massive splash when Hollywood directors got their hands on it.
The details:
Premiere Pro will be able to fill in parts of scenes and remove distractions using AI.
Adobe is opening its platform to include tools from OpenAI, Runway, and Pika Labs.
Adobe will inform users when they are not using Adobe's "commercially safe" models (ironic considering Adobe’s AI is not as safe as they say).
Adobe will clearly label videos produced with third-party AI (tools will eliminate this easily).
AI competition is heating up and Adobe had a drop in stock price.
Takeaway: If Adobe is doing this, then prepare for AI generated video to make huge waves in every video you see. Using AI generated video will be a new skill for editors and content creators to learn. This is set to happen by the end of the year. Hopefully Premiere’s offering can be as impressive as Firefly’s.
