🤝 Microsoft steps down from OpenAI board observer

What happened: Microsoft has withdrawn from its non-voting observer role on OpenAI's board, while Apple has also opted not to take a similar position.

The details:

  • Microsoft accepted a non-voting position on OpenAI's board in November following CEO Sam Altman’s ouster and reinstatement.

  • Apple’s Phil Schiller was also rumored to join OpenAI’s board but has since opted out.

  • OpenAI will instead communicate with their big partners through regular meetings.

  • The reason for drawing back from the board? Government scrutiny.

  • June saw the FTC looking into big AI companies like Microsoft and Google. While the EU announced they were looking into anti-trust issues with Microsoft/OpenAI. And France is looking into Nvidia.

Why it matters: Big Tech is scared of further regulations on AI. Right now is the critical time when AI’s future big players are forming. This is why they’re so eager to self regulate right now. But I think it’s important to remember what these companies just tried to do. They want to partner together to create an unstoppable monopoly on AI.

📱 Apple Intelligence may rollout for iPhone Spring 2025. According to early reports by Bloomberg, Apple will introduce the new Siri with IOS 18.4 coming Spring next year. And more features will come out piece-meal. Additional features such as AI-powered emoji generation and writing assistance may follow later. The update also includes a new Siri interface and integration with ChatGPT.

🎥 Vimeo is joining Youtube and Meta by adding AI labels for any video generated with AI. While clearly unrealistic content like animations are exempt, realistic portrayals of people or events must be labeled. Let’s see how much better their AI detection is. Personally I think AI will get good enough to the point that these detection algorithms won’t be able to tell the difference.

🦾 Amazon sets up for AI powered enterprise apps

Source: Amazon

What happened: Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a new tool called App Studio that allows users to create enterprise software applications from written prompts. Yes, you read that right.

The details:

  • App Studio enables the creation of apps by describing their functionality and data sources in the prompt.

  • It’ll supposedly generate an application in minutes, support multiple data sources, and include a point-and-click interface for modifications. So extremely user friendly.

  • Connect with AWS services and third party tools, including their security services.

  • App Studio is available in preview starting Wednesday.

Why it matters: I’m hopeful but skeptical. AI creating entire apps for you is inevitable. It’s still early days. Even AI coders like Devin are impressive but limited. But someday this app might replace app developers entirely.

📨 Claude’s Artifact sharing is now live

What happened: You can now publicly share and remix Claude’s Artifacts (their equivalent to custom GPTs).

The details:

  • Artifacts can now be shared publicly.

  • You can use and remix other Artifacts to create something more customized.

  • Remember that Artifacts can create a variety of outputs, from documents and graphs to basic games.

Simple how-to share an Artifact:

  • Select to the Artifact you want to share.

  • Make sure to double check this is the exact Artifiact version you want to share.

  • Find the Publish button and click it. Done!

  • You’ll eventually be able to find custom Artifacts on a separate webpage.

Why this matters: While OpenAI rules consumer-level AI, Claude 3 is targeting Enterprise. We’ll see features like these get used more and more in big companies and become a daily part of workday life.
